New Levi’s jeans are designed for urban cyclists

It’s been interesting to watch the parade of innovations that have emerged to support the rise of bicycling worldwide, and recently we spotted yet another one. Combining elements from two concepts we’ve already seen — Reflective Lace for nighttime safety and the wearable Hiplok for security and portability — the new Commuter series from Levi’s offers jeans that are designed specifically with urban cyclists in mind.

Built around the popular Levi’s 511 Skinny Jean for men, the 511 Commuter jean features fabric and construction upgrades for increased mobility and durability while also protecting cyclists from the potential hazards of their daily commute. Two lengths are available — one full-length and one cropped — as are both denim and non-denim fabrics. Much more interesting, however, is the garment’s NanoSphere-treated fabric for improved durability and resistance to both dirt and water — technology conceived through a partnership with Swiss Schoeller Technologies AG. Levi’s also consulted with textile specialty firm Clariant for invisible protection against odors, while 3M Scotchlite subtly integrates 300,000 candle watt reflectivity into key areas of the jean for increased visibility in the dark. Then, too, there’s a touch of added stretch, a raised back yolk to minimize lower back gap and a reinforced crotch gusset that protects against ripping. The finishing touch is a utility waist band can store the wearer’s bicycle U-lock. Also included in the Commuter series is a cycling-adapted version of the classic Levi’s Trucker Jacket. The 511 Commuter jean retails for USD 78, while the Commuter Trucker Jacket is priced at USD 128.

Launched in July, the Commuter series is available online, through select independent bike shops in major metro cities, and at select Urban Outfitters and Levi’s Stores. Urban, cycling-minded retailers around the globe: how about you?
