The Software Association of Oregon (SAO), the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) and a group of supporters are recruiting innovative entrepreneurs for a collaborative approach to growing the next generation of Smart Grid businesses in the state.
The collaborative effort is intended to step outside the bounds of traditional business startups by bringing together a number of professionals and a collection of ideas, choosing the best concepts and using them as the basis to develop one or more new Smart Grid businesses.
The collaboration formally begins Oct. 19 with the first of a series of brainstorming sessions to identify and assess the most promising Smart Grid business opportunities. The application deadline for joining the panel is Oct. 12. A total of 40 participants will be selected. Criteria for screening applicants will be ideas, interest, entrepreneurial experience and Smart Grid expertise.
James Mater, independent entrepreneur and co-founder of Quality Logic, a software testing company, is a key organizer of the Smart Grid Startup Project. He put it this way: "Competitive times often require innovative approaches and if Oregon is to make a mark in Smart Grid technology we must bring together the best and brightest this state has to offer. We believe a collaborative approach to creating new Smart Grid business is our best hope of putting together the people, ideas, skills and investments needed to make Oregon a leader in this vital new industry.
Wayne Embree, co-founder of investment firm Reference Capital Management and a project steering committee member, said this innovative approach to growing startups could yield a successful model in entrepreneurship that could be adopted by others.
The 12-member steering committee includes representatives from SAO and OTBC as well as professionals in law, investing, marketing, technology and energy.
